The bad effects of winter weather

by Dylan Saunders, reporter

Now that winter is officially here, one can guess that the weather predictions are going to consist of: freezing temperatures, snow, freezing rain, and hail.

Senior, Ryan Carroll does not mind the winter weather. “It’s not that bad because we can always have hope in getting out of school,” says Ryan. Getting out of school is certainly a nice thing, as long as students do not mind making that day up in the future. No day can go unaccounted for and must be made up during good weather.

“Of course it’s a good thing to come into school two hours later and it would be allowed,” says Junior, Sophie Monboussin.

Some students drive to school so they don’t always enjoy the snow like Senior, Mackenzie Walck. “Driving in the snow is the worst! I do not mind the snow itself unless I have to drive in it.”

Driving from on top the mountain down into town in a bus is probably worse than driving in your own vehicle. “Waiting for the bus in the cold is the worst part, but the bus itself is also bad because it’s like always cold and late,” says Junior Savannah Shumbris.

Heating bills are also a downfall in the winter. “My parents always talk about how much it costs just to heat up my room in the winter,” says Senior Sam Gilkes. For people who like the house warm, it comes with a price. Senior, Johnathan Ulshafer uses a pellet stove to heat his house, “they’re so convenient and can really get hot, which I like.” This reporter’s house saved over four-hundred dollars from switching from electric heating to a pellet stove.

After all is said and done, winter can be a great and beautiful thing or a great tragedy. It varies of how one copes with the cold weather, driving conditions, and the heating bills to keep warm. Most students look at winter as an awful time to do anything but miss school.
