To tan or not to tan?

To tan or not to tan?

by Gabbie Binder, reporter

Prom season is coming up and many girls are heading straight to the tanning salon. This seems to be an innocent act, but is it really? Girls seem to be torn on whether being tan for that special day is worth the possible health problems that could arise from laying in a tanning bed.

Tanning beds emit dangerous UV rays. These rays cause damage to the first two layers of skin causing skin cells to release melanin which is what causes the skin to turn a darker shade.  Repetitive exposure could cause health issues such as skin cancer and eye cancer. Other harmful effects include early aging of the skin as well has problems with the immune system. It is proven that tanning beds themselves are more harmful than that of the natural sun, because of the intensity of the beds.

Senior, Lindsay Capper stated,  “I feel tanning before prom is dumb because of the health risks. It isn’t worth it for just a high school prom. “

A main argument someone might have about tanning before prom is that since that person is only doing it for that short period of time, no harmful things could occur. However just one time over exposing your skin to these harmful rays can cause damage to your skin.

So, in preparations for prom, girls might want to think again about how badly they want to be tan. It seems that it is not really worth what the consequences may be.
