Mainstream versus underground

There are many types of genres in music. These genres are typically branched into two major groups: mainstream and underground.

“I listen to more acoustic music,” said Spanish teacher, Miss Johanna Tripler.

Mainstream is music played on the radio or mainly known by anyone. For example: Beyoncé, Rihanna, Alessia Cara, Katy Perry, and Justin Timberlake are all mainstream musicians. Do not get confused with the fact some underground artists have been played on the radio. It is all on the genre and how a record label promotes them. Mainstream artists have big record labels who promote them with radio or other media. Mostly: Pop, RnB, Dance, Rap, Country, and certain Rock are all examples of Mainstream.

“I know both Alternative and Indie rock music. Although, I really don’t listen to Indie music,” said junior, Kayla Ward.

Underground is the exact opposite of mainstream; it’s normally not played on the radio or not known to most people. Though artists or bands like: Twenty-One Pilots, Adele, Halsey, Awolnation, Bastille, Imagine Dragon, Paramore, Sia, Daya, Fitz and The Tantrums, Passion Pit, Fall Out Boy, Lorde, and Walk the Moon all have been played on the radio. In other words, they promote themselves rather than someone else promoting them. For example: Motionless in White, Melanie Martinez, Evanescence, Ellie Goulding, Foxes, Marina and The Diamonds, Florence and The Machine, Arctic Monkeys, Bjork, TV on The Radio, The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm, and Atl-J are all underground artists who promoted themselves or are not known. Metal, Alternative, Indie, and some rap are genres that are underground.

“I like all kinds of music,” said Mrs. Trudy Miller.

These both groups have things in common that have sub-genres. Thousand Foot Krutch is rap metal. There are other artists like The Weekend which is Alternative RnB. So, there are more than just one way to group genres of music. Mainstream and Underground both started back then like: Tears for Fears, The Beatles, A-ha, Nirvana, Heart, and Eurythmic. More including Whitney Houston, Prince, Michael Jackson, and Amy Winehouse. The only difference is in how they both are perceived.
