Every fall, Jim Thorpe High School has its annual homecoming dance and football game. Each year six boys and six girls are nominated to run for homecoming king and queen. This years nominees included Ben Saxon, Jake Burkhart, Antonio Madera, Brendan Carroll, Logan Hunsicker, and Cam Condly. On the girls side, it was Jillian Peterson, Delana Nalesnik, Camille Principe, Leah Detwiler, Paige Pfeifer, and Brooke Cope. The weeks leading up to the big homecoming game were filled with poster making and giving out candy. This year, the homecoming game was on October 14. The winners of this year’s king and queen were Brooke Cope and Antonio Madera.

“It was a big game. Winning homecoming king was an honor and an even better part of the night. The team came out with a win against Tamaqua, so all in all, it was a great night,” says Madera.

With having five other nominees to run against, getting votes can be tricky. Most candidates handed out candy during lunches. Making signs and hanging up posters is another way to spread the word.

“I made posters the very first night of running. It was a lot of fun making them all,” Brooke Cope said. “I made candy bags and handed them out during the lunches. The whole experience of being on the homecoming court was great, and I was honored to be voted queen.”

Homecoming candidate, Ben Saxon attended the homecoming dance on the following Saturday. It is his senior year and last homecoming dance.

“The dance was a lot of fun. If I would have to pick something that was not fun, the only thing was the music. I think the music could have been a little better. The decorations were nice, and it was a good last homecoming dance,” says Saxon.

Overall, the homecoming game and dance were a success. All the nominees got to have an experience that they will never forget. Homecoming week is a fun week for all students of the Jim Thorpe Area High School.
