Senior Olympics

by Brenna Gutwein, Reporter

The annual Senior Olympics program officially started on April 20, 2018 for the students at Jim Thorpe High School. It is run by Mr. McGonigal and Mrs. Butchko. This program gives senior students a good chance to use this as a graduation project and to fulfill the graduation requirements.

“I joined Senior Olympics to reach my graduation requirement and give back to the Jim Thorpe community,” said Triselle Samuels.

Sometimes, the first choice of a project idea does not always end up working or is not always the greatest choice. The Senior Olympics has a great way of showing everyone’s participation. It gives students the opportunity to work with all of the different peers within the class. This program helps the students get out and get active with our community. It also gets the

student class to come together to join hands in making a citizens day by doing something so simple to the students but something so sweet to someone else. When students are rushing around to figure out what they will be doing for senior projects, this is definitely a great alternative or even last minute choice.

Senior, Triselle Samuels says, “Yes, it is an opportunity to interact with others seniors that you are not too familiar with or close to, and give back for the same cause.”

This includes various trips to different places within the area with different groups of senior citizens. The trips picked to go on include a golf course, fishing, the Lehighton Rec. Center, and more. This adds to the good reputation of the Jim Thorpe High School and the students showing participation. It also gives good inspiration to the underclassmen that have soon to be graduation requirements to fulfill. Also, after finishing this program, students could use this on college applications as volunteering, and it would make the application better by filling it with volunteer work.

“I knew this was an option from talking to seniors that have graduated,” says Triselle Samuels.

The students are recommended to get out and volunteer time to the senior citizens to just help make someone’s day better. It is definitely a great opportunity to get out and meet new people and create different bonds with each individual.
