Girls basketball takes district lead

Jim Thorpe girls basketball season has come to an end and is heading to districts with a 22-0 record. The team itself has come a long way and powered their way through for an undefeated season.

“Our team is strong, diligent, unified and intense,” said Natalia Richards, a starter for the girls team.

Those traits seemed to help them seize their way to victory, or almost victory because it isn’t over yet. The girls just played their first playoff game against Lourdes at Martz Hall in Pottsville, and of course, they took the win.

“To keep our record improving we just work as a team, always continue to pick each other up, work on little things, make sure we continue on both ends and not to give up right away, and we always have to play like it’s our last,” said Olivia Smelas, a starting freshman forward for the team.

Saturday, February 16ththe girls are playing against Mahonoy, which they have not played yet in the season, but both teams seem to have the aggressiveness and the intensity to lead to a good game. The girls did not appear to have too many troubling games this season because of the vigorous heat they bring to the court.

“I think that our high point in the season hasn’t come yet. We don’t want to peak until post-season. That’s our goal and we are sticking to it,” said Natalia.

Overall, it is Natalia’s last year playing for the Lady Olympians, and soon enough she will have a story to tell about their highest point this year, but until then it is up to her and her teammates to prepare to dominate and be called the first undefeated team in Jim Thorpe Area girls basketball.
