Chess club returns

by Jacob Holt, reporter

The chess team is starting once again. The chess team/club for Jim Thorpe High School is reassembling and information was gathered to make sure all facts are gotten and nothing is left out. Chess team is not all on a competitive level. People who are new to the game or aren’t sure if they are ready for the big leagues, can just go to the chess club. The long time coach of the chess team will have to deal with new recruits.

Mr. Eric Hill, chess team advisor, was asked what he is more excited for: seeing old faces return, or new faces join the team? He replied with, “It’s great to see old faces return, but I always enjoy having new players.  It is very rewarding to watch new players learn the game of chess and then become competitive when playing other schools.”

To the new faces who join, there will be some new challenges. First off, everyone on the team will have to get used to the way others play and to learn how to work an a team. The only real changes are to the team itself having no seniors playing.

Mr. Hill stated, “This year’s team will be young.  We have no seniors on this year’s team and quite a few freshmen.  Last season, we had a good mix of youth and experience.  This season, will be primarily youth, with little competitive chess experience.”

Not much has changed for the team. There will not be many people returning, but for the ones that are, the key player of the team is the captain, Lauren Hill.

Mr. Hill was asked if he had a player on the team, that without that person, the team would lack in a way. He stated, “All the players are important, but our captain, Lauren Hill, really helps keep the program organized.  She has been around the chess program for quite a few years and has taken a leadership role with our younger players. Lauren keeps the players informed of any changes in our schedule and also helps our younger players learn the game of chess.”

The freshmen of the team will have much to learn if it is their first time playing chess. Hopefully, most of the people of on the team already know the basics of the game. If not, they will have to learn quickly. It shouldn’t be hard because there will be other players willing to help each other and working to get a better team experience.
