The upcoming flu season

Students at the high school are probably not very excited about the approaching flu season. This is another interference that gets in the way of plans and activities. This may just be everyone’s least favorite season; everyone’s nightmare. This season may be worse or better than the past seasons, but what is known, is that this long, long season is…flu season.

“The last couple of years have been pretty busy in my office, although it is always busy in general,” Mrs. Lienhard, the school nurse said.

The flu the past few years has been at a lower rate than it has been in the past. The nurse’s office is, of course, always busy with people who have illnesses. Lehigh valley has already struck with the flu, so now it may move toward us. Many students in the Jim Thorpe Area High School have already been showing symptoms of the flu. There have been signs that many teachers and other fellow peers have been getting slight fevers and even a lot of upper respiratory problems.

“I have been seeing students coming in who have some upper respiratory problems and headaches,” Mrs. Lienhard said.

Now, students may be thinking what are some ways they can prevent the flu. They can always try getting the flu shot provided by their doctor ahead of time, but some people come to believe it does not work very well. The best possible way to avoid the flu is by washing hands and overall just taking care of the body. Try to get plenty of sleep and try to eat healthy and well. Remember, flu vaccines may be helpful, but everyone’s bodies behave in a different manner.

“We all respond differently to vaccines, so I don’t try to force things like this to students. It’s the students and their parent’s decisions if they want to get a flu shot or not,” Mrs. Lienhard said.

Flu season is just another bump in the road for students, teachers, and everyone else in the world. The flu may be a long tedious season, but at least being sick is like a break away from reality, and all there is to do is relax.
