Jim Thorpe vs. Lehighton

Rivalry against towns

by Danni Mergel, Reporter

On January 28, 2017, the Jim Thorpe Olympian boys basketball players faced their biggest rivals, the Lehighton Indians, at the Jim Thorpe High School. Everyone came out to see their favorite Olympians and to cheer on the guys.

Students came out to see their favorite Olympians play: (2) Brenden Carroll, (3) Andre Samuel, (4) Matt Elmore, (5) Chris Micciche, (20) Aaron Joyce, and their head coach, Jason McElmoyle.

“It was a tough, hard fought game, but in the end, we were in able to prevail,” said Freshman, Dominic Madera. “Even though we lost, we were still able to push through and keep the game going.”

Students were very supportive of their JT Olympians and kept the guys going and playing hard.

“The fan section did silent night up to the first ten points. After that, it was loud and continued to grow and get louder,” said Nicole Huddleston, a Freshman JV cheerleader for the Jim Thorpe team.

The fan section was very supportive of the Olympians and cheered them on through the whole game. The students wore red, white, and blue spirit wear to show their pride of Jim Thorpe.  This showed Lehighton how much the students appreciate their school.

The players were not too happy with the way they played, but as long as they keep pushing through and keep their heads up high, the players know that they can clinch that spot in the playoffs!
