Jim Thorpe homecoming is filled with campaigns, music, dancing, and friends. Christopher Williams and Sarah Gabel were crowned homecoming king and queen on October 6th, 2017, at the homecoming football game.
“Homecoming was really fun for me, especially being a senior. It looks like everyone enjoyed themselves and that’s what mattered most,” said Christopher Williams, senior.
Homecoming during senior year is often very memorable.
“Homecoming dance was fun as always. I had an amazing night, but I was disappointed that we didn’t do “the tunnel” like we have done every other year,” said Sarah Gabel, senior.
Campaigning for homecoming is not an easy task. Many hours were spent in the days leading up to voting day.
“A number of long nights went into it. After coming home from soccer, I would eat and do my homework and then try to think of ideas for posters and signs. I was constantly on the phone with Sarah discussing our plans. It was definitely a team effort,” said Williams.
Although quick fame could change a student’s perspective, Chris has stayed true to himself.
“I’m still the same old Chris,” he stated.
As for Sarah, although she also stayed true to herself, her appearance in the public eye has changed a bit.
“Socially among my peers, nothing has changed. However, whenever I walk anywhere in town, adults acknowledge me and tell me ‘congratulations,’ then strike up a conversation,” she said.
The tension leading up from voting day to the homecoming football game, where the results were revealed, was abundant. For Chris and Sarah, the tension turned to excitement and relief.
“I thought I had a decent chance. Chris and I are both involved in a lot and are pretty diverse. We both have passions for athletics and music, so we know a lot of people,” said Gabel.
Homecoming night was a big night for the seniors, as it is their last, and a fun night for the other students.
