Winter sports preview

The 2017-2018 season of winter sports at Jim Thorpe Area High School has begun. The usual teams ARE Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball and Wrestling. There is hope that all the teams and indivuals, when it comes to wrestling, make a deep run in districts.

“This year we really think that we are one of the best teams in the league. We have the strength and a lot more experience than a lot of the teams this year with our starting lineup all being seniors.  The team is really hoping to make it past the first round of districts with a breeze,” said sophomore basketball player, Makayla Davison.

The girls’ basketball team is projected to do big things this year. Like Davison said, they have the experience, which is nothing but true with senior Kayley Kovac signing her National Letter of Intent for Saint Francis University girls’ basketball earlier this year. The boys’ basketball team is also projected to be a contender in the league, but they will face a little more opposition on the way. Losing a couple key seniors from last year’s team, but from the couple of games they have played this season, everyone can see they have had no problem filling those roles.

“We lost a couple of seniors, but we still have the experience and talent we need to really make a splash this year. Our starters know what to do and even those coming off the bench know what to do. If we keep working hard all season I have no doubt we be one of the best this year,” said senior Chris Valdez.

The last team that will be sporting a Jim Thorpe uniform this season is the wrestling team. The wrestling team has had a decent amount of success in the past years, with a state winner in Kevin Gentile back in 2016.

“This year I really want to place in districts,” said junior Ethan Mordant.

Students are out supporting all the teams the best that they can. Anyone looking for something to do on almost any night of the week can always expect for there to be at least one game or match happening. The wrestling team goes up against Pottsville on Wednesday night and both boys’ and girls’ basketball play Lehighton this week with the girls at Lehighton on Thursday and the boys home on Friday.
